Ruthy Alon says that she was lucky enough to be in the right place, at the right time and to have the right teacher — Fortunate factors that each contributed to her life’s calling.
In Tel Aviv, in 1959 — when she not quite thirty, and a mother of two — Ruthy began attending the weekly public classes conducted by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais’ that he later called Awareness Through Movement®.
These were the years when Dr. Feldenkrais was well known in Israel as the personal trainer of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who highly recommended this method of promoting physical efficiency to “every young person.” To see his letter of recommendation  Click Here 
 

In 1967, when Feldenkrais decided to train practitioners in his hands-on method of individual teaching — later called Functional Integration® — Ruthy, who had already been teaching his group movement processes devotedly for several years, was fortunate to be among the thirteen chosen ones invited to sit on straw stools around the master’s low treatment table and, four years later, graduate from his very first training.

Since those early formative days in Israel, the Feldenkrais Method® became the central axis about which Ruthy’s personal development and professional contributions evolved. She was the first practitioner to follow Moshe to the U.S., coming to the Esalen Institute in California in 1972, and then teaching his innovative approach to humanistic-oriented communities in other centers and universities throughout North America, and internationally.

During the 1970s, when many people sought ways to take responsibility for their personal ecology, they found a congruent and pragmatic message in the approach offered by Moshe Feldenkrais. Ruthy was assisting Moshe in his first professional trainings. After Moshe passed away, in 1984, Ruthy conducted her own four-year professional Feldenkrais training in San Diego, for the first time, which was followed by other trainings in Tel Aviv, Sydney, and Florence, as well as teaching as a guest trainer around the world.  




 


“It is not just a method of body movement,” says Ruthy, “but an awakening of bodily resourcefulness and creativity.” As early as the seventeeth Ruthy started to create for the general public audiotapes of her Free Your Back workshop, (Click Here) as well as her Grammar of Spontaneity programs (Click Here) sharing basic movement processes that made a difference in the lives of many people. Movement Nature Meant, a videotape of her own movement presentation, has been widely distributed throughout the Feldenkrais community and, truly, a video is worth a thousand words. (Click Here)

In 1970 Ruthy published her insights from teaching Feldenkrais professional trainings in the book Mindful Spontaneity  — "I had a need to explain to myself what I know", she says. The book is soon to be reprinted by Amazon. (Click Here) This work has been translated into seven more languages, and was awarded the Book-of-the-Year prize for Natural Healing by the Jungian Society in Italy.

Ruthy’s ongoing quest to promote and restore peoples’ wellbeing through the Feldenkrais' Functional  Integration approach, has led her to her own life’s work: creating the Bones For Life program for providing a movement answer to the extended problem of bone deterioration in the culture. In the Bones program she applies the somatic learning principles of the Feldenkrais Method, interpreted into a quite different context: dynamic impactful movement, within the realities of vertical posture, power management and rhythm — all as required to engage and stimulate counter-gravity bone function.

The safe "green house " conditions for allowing new learning Ruthy had to provide  by other means than lying on the ground, like using a harness wrap or support of a wall.  Her Bones for Life program is currently taught in over 30 countries.

Always tuned into the crucial needs of her time, Ruthy continues to create additional programs, all under the umbrella of Movement Intelligence, for awakening core resourcefulness — the inner compass for navigating a personally gratifying way of functioning.

Each program provides people with new perceptions and practical guidance in how to free themselves from compromised ways of moving by challenging their core organic sense of movement Intelligence, capable  of autonomous self-correction.
One of the special qualities that Ruthy brings to her teaching is her capacity to decipher complex combinations of movement coordination, and to design solutions that can improve them in the way nature meant. She offers clear verbal explanations that empower her students to comprehend and master the work on their own, arriving at their successes with a sense of personal accomplishment.
Ruthy balances the influences of the intuitively harmonious right-brain, acquired from her mother, of Jewish Moroccan origin, with the left-brain conceptual thinking of her Jewish Russian father. She was born in Colombia, South America, and grew up in Israel. During her teenage years she attended school at a kibbutz, which imprinted in her an idealistic vision for social progress. She is a graduate of a teachers’ college in Jerusalem. Her meaningful education though, she says, "is the informal learning with Feldenkrais". Recently, at the age of 83, despite an extensive worldwide teaching schedule, she completed a Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medical University with a dissertation on Movement Intelligence. (Click here)

Ruthy’s family of 2 children includes now five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her home, where she lives with Dan de-Medina, a brain scientist, is in Jerusalem. In her mature years she is a living model of what she teaches, as demonstrated by her youthful, flowing way of moving, which, she says, gets better year by year!
